Constellation and Amazon partner to expand Maryland nuclear plant

Energy producer Constellation Energy Corporation and Amazon have signed a long-term agreement to support a $3 billion infrastructure expansion at the Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center, Maryland’s sole nuclear power station.

The 20-year agreement covers 690 megawatts (MW) of power, backing a planned 190 MW uprate in generating capacity set to come online between 2030 and 2032. The deal also includes a retail supply agreement to support Amazon’s corporate and data center operations across the 13-state PJM regional grid.

All electricity generated by the 1,790 MW facility will continue to flow directly into the PJM regional transmission network.

The commercial commitment provides Constellation with financial backing to relicense the two-unit Lusby facility for an additional 20 years, while supporting preliminary planning for potential future clean energy generation at the site.

Joe Dominguez, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Constellation, stated that private corporate commitments are critical to maintaining base-load nuclear capacity and enabling long-term capital investments in grid infrastructure.

Kerry Person, Vice President of AWS Global Operations and Data Center Delivery, noted that long-term power purchase agreements sustain existing carbon-free generation while funding capacity additions on the regional grid.

Located in Calvert County, the facility currently produces approximately 80 per cent of Maryland’s zero-emission electricity, employing over 800 workers and contributing $21 million annually in local tax revenues.
