Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL), India’s largest renewable energy producer, has expanded its operational Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity at Khavda, Gujarat, to 6.63 gigawatt-hours (GWh), up from 3.55 GWh recorded in June 2026.
With this expansion, AGEL now accounts for more than 50 per cent of India’s total operational battery storage capacity, which currently stands at approximately 12.6 GWh. The capacity addition reinforces Khavda’s position as the world’s largest operational BESS installation at a single location.
The company achieved the 6.63 GWh operational capacity within 14 months of breaking ground at the site, with the latest expansion completed in 10 months. The battery storage infrastructure is integrated into AGEL’s broader 30 GW renewable energy hybrid park spanning 538 square kilometres in the Rann of Kutch.
The 6.63 GWh installation can store sufficient zero-emission electricity to power approximately two million homes daily or meet the peak power demand of major urban centres for several hours. The system utilises lithium-ion battery technology linked with automated telemetry and Energy Management Systems (EMS) to manage charging cycles, reduce power curtailment, and provide real-time grid stabilization services.
Sagar Adani, Executive Director at Adani Green Energy, stated that scaling large-scale battery storage is critical to making intermittent solar and wind generation firm, reliable, and dispatchable as national electricity demand continues to rise.
AGEL remains on track to add over 10 GWh of battery storage capacity in FY 2026–27, targeting a total storage capacity of 50 GWh over the next five years alongside developing pumped storage projects (PSPs) across India.
