AWS commits over $1bn to local communities hosting its data centres

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing division of Amazon.com Inc, has announced plans to invest more than $1 billion over the next five years across US communities hosting its data centre facilities.

The investment plan arrives amid growing local public opposition and political scrutiny regarding the environmental footprint of artificial intelligence infrastructure, particularly concerning regional electricity demand, rising utility costs, and municipal water consumption.

The company disclosed that it invested $276 billion in data centre infrastructure between 2011 and 2025, with major facilities and expansion projects currently underway in states including Indiana, Louisiana, North Carolina, Virginia, and Mississippi.

AWS stated that the new community investment framework will allocate capital toward local education programmes, workforce training, energy affordability initiatives, and local water and energy conservation projects.

The announcement comes as local authorities across the United States evaluate more than 100 proposed data centre moratoriums aimed at pausing new developments.

Matt Garman, Chief Executive Officer of AWS, stated that accelerating data centre infrastructure is critical to maintaining national economic competitiveness and technological leadership in artificial intelligence.

Addressing resource consumption concerns, AWS reaffirmed its commitment to become water positive by 2030 by returning more water to local watersheds than its facility operations consume, reporting that it has achieved 75 per cent of its target to date.
