NYK acquires 30% stake in Norway’s offshore Trudvang CCS project

Japanese maritime transport operator Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) has signed a sale and purchase agreement with Vår Energi CCS AS to acquire a 30 per cent interest in Trudvang CCS ANS and the associated offshore CO₂ storage exploration licence EXL007 in Norway.

The transaction will be executed via a wholly owned Norwegian subsidiary to be established by NYK, subject to customary regulatory approvals and closing conditions.

The Trudvang CCS project, operated by Vår Energi alongside partner INPEX Idemitsu Norge AS, focuses on capturing carbon dioxide from European industrial emitters, transporting the gas, and permanently injecting it into geological formations beneath the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Upon completion of the equity transfer, NYK will join as a 30 per cent project partner.

NYK currently operates in liquefied CO₂ (LCO₂) shipping through Knutsen NYK Carbon Carriers AS (KNCC), a 50:50 joint venture with the Knutsen Group. The acquisition of the Trudvang stake expands NYK’s presence beyond maritime transport into offshore handling, injection, and geological carbon storage.

The company stated that participating in the Norwegian project will provide operational and technical experience in managing integrated carbon capture and storage (CCS) value chains, supporting its strategy to establish commercial foundations across zero-emission maritime and offshore energy sectors.
