Blackstone closes $8.7bn energy transition fund ahead of target

Global alternative asset manager Blackstone (NYSE: BX) has announced the final close of its flagship private equity fund, Blackstone Energy Transition Partners V (BETP V), securing $8.7 billion in capital commitments.

The oversubscribed vehicle reached its hard cap and stands more than 50 per cent larger than its predecessor fund, reflecting sustained institutional demand for energy infrastructure exposure.

The fund, which commenced its deployment period in June, targets large-scale equity investments across energy transition infrastructure, power generation, grid modernization, and industrial decarbonization sectors. According to company disclosures, Blackstone’s energy transition strategy has delivered a 34 per cent net internal rate of return (IRR) from 1997 through June 2026.

BETP V has already deployed capital across three new platform companies—Kindle, Fisterra, and Viridon—focused on developing power generation assets and electrical transmission infrastructure. The vehicle has also executed three acquisitions targeting energy efficiency and infrastructure resilience, comprising:

  • Flow Control Holdings: A US provider of liquid cooling solutions for data centers to reduce thermal management energy demand.
  • Dresser Utility Solutions: A North American manufacturer of measurement, pressure regulation, and repair components for gas and water utility networks.
  • DarkVision: An asset inspection service provider utilizing imaging technologies to evaluate critical energy infrastructure integrity.

Since January 2025, Blackstone’s energy transition platform has committed over $11 billion in total equity across equipment manufacturers, grid services, data analytics, and gas-fired power generation.

Over the same period, the platform completed several realizations from predecessor funds, including the sale of battery storage developer Aypa Power, the divestment of a majority stake in utility infrastructure manufacturer Sabre Industries, and the initial public offering of mechanical engineering services provider Legence (NASDAQ: LGN).

David Foley, Global Head of Blackstone Energy Transition Partners, stated that escalating global electricity demand presents a structural investment opportunity to expand manufacturing capacity, build critical grid infrastructure, and scale energy platform businesses.
