Capgemini signs first durable carbon removal deals with Climeworks and Charm Industrial

Capgemini has announced two new carbon dioxide removal (CDR) agreements with leading players in the sector—direct air capture (DAC) pioneer Climeworks and bio-oil sequestration specialist Charm Industrial.

Under the terms of the deals, Climeworks will remove 13,000 tonnes of atmospheric CO₂ using its DAC technology, while Charm Industrial is contracted to sequester 16,500 tonnes of carbon through its bio-oil carbon removal process.

The agreement with Charm Industrial will support the company’s expansion, including scaling its production facility in Colorado and initiating new partnerships focused on wildfire risk mitigation. In a statement, Charm emphasised the importance of long-term commitments to climate infrastructure:
“Capgemini gets that. They’re not just buying 16,500 tonnes of removal—they’re investing in the infrastructure of climate stability.”

The announcement coincides with Climeworks’ recent milestone: a 50% reduction in energy consumption achieved with its third-generation DAC technology, marking a significant step forward in the scalability and efficiency of carbon removal solutions.

According to CDR.fyi, these are the first durable CDR deals by Capgemini to be registered on the platform.

Capgemini, headquartered in Paris, is a multinational IT and consulting firm and was among the early adopters of science-based climate targets, receiving validation for its net-zero goals from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in 2016. The new agreements align with its broader decarbonisation strategy to reach net-zero emissions by 2040, including a target to neutralise 10% of its residual emissions through high-quality carbon removal solutions.

In addition to these DAC and bio-oil initiatives, Capgemini is also investing in nature-based carbon removal approaches, such as reforestation and regenerative agriculture, as part of its multi-pronged effort to address climate change.
