Colombia launches $40bn investment portfolio for clean energy

Colombia has unveiled a new investment portfolio aimed at facilitating its transition away from fossil fuels and adapting to climate change, to attract approximately $40 billion in funding, an environment ministry spokesperson confirmed on Friday.

The investment portfolio is designed to support eco-tourism, promote a fair energy transition, and fund the conservation and restoration of ecosystems, according to a statement from the ministry on Thursday. Initially, the ministry mistakenly cited a figure of $40 million but corrected the amount to $40 billion the following day.

“Colombia is leading the discussion on how to carry out a truly fair climate and energy transition. We’re on the way to consolidating a donor group that will allow us to achieve an important financial package for the country,” Environment Minister Susana Muhamad said in New York.

Colombia is set to host the COP16 United Nations biodiversity conference in Cali at the end of October.
