EcoVadis unveils carbon data integrity framework to tackle Scope 3 trust deficit

Supply chain sustainability rating giant EcoVadis has published the full methodology behind its Carbon Data Reliability Level™ (DRL) framework, urging global industry stakeholders to adopt the system as an open standard for corporate emissions reporting.

The framework is designed to function as an automated integrity filter to resolve the persistent “trust deficit” in Scope 3 supply chain reporting. The move comes as corporations face accelerating statutory disclosure mandates, including Europe’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and California’s Senate Bill 253. While artificial intelligence and automated carbon accounting tools have rapidly scaled to meet these mandates, experts warn that these systems frequently process unverified inputs, risking building corporate climate strategies on unreliable foundations.

The DRL framework automatically evaluates green house gas (GHG) metrics submitted across the EcoVadis Carbon Data Network, which encompasses approximately 60,000 reporting organisations worldwide. The system channels supplier information through a sequential, cumulative three-gate architecture to assign a distinct reliability score:

  • Gate 1 (Evidence Check): The system establishes whether a reported emissions figure can be traced directly to an authentic source document. Entries lacking verifiable source documentation are immediately categorised as “low” reliability and excluded from further processing.
  • Gate 2 (Rigor Check): The mechanism evaluates the scientific validity of the calculation methodologies, ensuring alignment with the GHG Protocol and assessing whether the data has undergone third-party verification.
  • Gate 3 (Plausibility Check): The platform crosses the submitted data against sector-specific benchmarks within the wider network to identify and isolate statistically improbable anomalies.

The evaluation process segment data into a clear, four-tier taxonomy: Low, Medium, High, or Third-Party Verified/Compliance-Ready Intelligence.

The methodology has been structured to function as a compliance enabler, mapping directly to major international standards. High and third-party verified data generated by the framework align with the “primary” data classification rules required under CSRD and ESRS E1. It similarly satisfies the data-tier disaggregation rules of the upcoming GHG Protocol Scope 3 Phase 1 Revision, and delivers the documented evidence chains necessary to support assurance engagements under the ISSA 5000 standard.

Dexter Galvin, Senior Vice President of Climate at EcoVadis, emphasised that whilst Scope 3 emissions represent the largest share of most corporate climate footprints, it remains the area where data quality is poorest. He stated that the DRL framework shifts the market focus from basic data availability to validated reliability.

By integrating these metrics across partner carbon accounting platforms, the system allows a supplier’s verified data reliability level to be recognised universally across the corporate ecosystem. Galvin added that establishing an open reliability baseline empowers procurement and finance teams to transform Scope 3 emissions from a complex compliance risk into an opportunity for verifiable climate impact.
