Fermi America seeks approval for additional 5GW clean air permit

Construction work at Project Matador’s 17GW Private Power Campus

Fermi Inc., operating as Fermi America (NASDAQ & LSE: FRMI), has announced plans to file an additional 5GW Clean Air Permit with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) in partnership with the Texas Tech University System.

The move follows the approval of Project Matador’s first 6GW Clean Air Permit two weeks ago and forms part of the company’s plan to build a 17GW private power campus in Texas. The project is expected to include 11GW of natural gas capacity, 4.4GW of nuclear power, as well as solar and battery energy storage.

Toby Neugebauer, co-founder and CEO of Fermi America, said: “Leave it to Texas to answer the call for America’s energy crisis. Why would we settle for 6GW of clean natural gas when the country needs more power, not less, and our site is beyond capable of safely producing 11GW? Fermi is pleased to steward this land and environment well, while creating additional high-paying jobs and economic development for the region.”

Fermi America said the project is designed to meet rapidly growing electricity demand from sectors such as artificial intelligence, advanced computing, domestic manufacturing and defence, which are placing increasing pressure on existing power infrastructure.

Project Matador is being developed as a large-scale private grid campus intended to supply power directly to hyperscale data centres and compute-intensive industries. The facility is expected to combine natural gas, advanced nuclear, solar generation and battery storage to deliver reliable, low-carbon energy at scale.

Fermi America said the campus already has more than 2GW of secured generation assets, alongside financing and regulatory approvals needed to support the expansion.

The company stated that once fully developed, Project Matador will be one of the largest private power campuses globally, designed to support the growing energy demands of AI and high-performance computing industries.
