GMA, RMI, and 3Degrees launch Green Ammonia Buyers Alliance

The Center for Green Market Activation (GMA), RMI, and 3Degrees have launched the Green Ammonia Buyers Alliance (GABA), an initiative designed to help food and beverage companies aggregate purchasing power and finance zero-emission fertilizer production.

Global fertilizer manufacturing generates an estimated 1.2 gigatonnes of CO2 equivalent annually, with traditional natural-gas-based ammonia production accounting for the vast majority of those emissions. Green ammonia, produced via water electrolysis powered by renewable energy, eliminates nearly all direct process emissions. GABA will aggregate buyer demand to help green ammonia developers secure bankable off-take structures required to finalize project financing.

Member companies will procure verified Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs) from green ammonia producers through a book-and-claim framework. This market mechanism enables downstream food manufacturers to address Scope 3 supply chain emissions without requiring physical changes to regional fertilizer delivery networks. The framework aligns with updated corporate accounting guidance, including the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2 and the Advanced and Indirect Mitigation (AIM) Platform Standard.

Key operational targets and timelines include:

  • Inaugural Procurement Pilot: GABA will open its initial competitive procurement process in the fourth quarter of 2026, offering early participating buyers first-mover pricing structures through 2027.
  • Complementary Industry Initiatives: GABA complements the 3Degrees-led Low Carbon Fertilizer Alliance (LCFA)—a 25-company collective focused on retrofitting existing nitrogen facilities using blue ammonia and nitric acid decarbonisation technologies.
  • Platform Governance: GMA and RMI will oversee high-integrity book-and-claim protocols and demand aggregation, while 3Degrees will manage environmental commodity market structures and procurement workflows.

Kim Carnahan, Chief Executive Officer of GMA, stated: “No company can scale a market like green ammonia on its own. GABA gives members of key sectors like food and bev a way to act collectively, creating the demand signal needed to help move projects from announcement to implementation.”

Thomas Koch Blank, Managing Director at RMI, added: “Green ammonia is one of the most important long-term pathways for reducing emissions from fertilizer production, but bringing new production online requires clear market signals. The Green Ammonia Buyers Alliance builds on what we’ve learned across other sectors: when companies come together around credible, long-term demand, they can give producers and investors confidence to move projects forward and accelerate adoption of lower-emissions technologies.”

Philippe Vedrenne, Chief Executive Officer of 3Degrees, noted: “GABA creates a dedicated platform for companies to collectively support the development of the green ammonia market. This platform directly compliments the Low Carbon Fertilizer Alliance, which is focused on retrofitting existing fertilizer production infrastructure through collective action.”
