HSBC has appointed Denise Odaro as Head of Sustainable Finance and Transition for Europe and the Americas, bringing more than 20 years of experience across capital markets, private equity and multilateral development finance.
The bank announced the appointment in a LinkedIn post, noting that Odaro will work with clients to support decarbonisation strategies and help scale transition ecosystems across key sectors.
Odaro has built a career at the intersection of finance and sustainability, leading sustainable finance as a commercial and transaction-driven discipline. She has previously overseen sustainability strategy across more than €27 billion in private equity assets and managed investor relations for a $17 billion annual sustainable finance issuance programme, engaging with over 1,000 institutional investors.
Earlier in her career, she worked at PAI Partners, where she led ESG integration across more than 45 portfolio companies in the model of an operating partner, focusing on operational value creation and sustainability performance.
Prior to that, Odaro held roles at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank Group, where she helped pioneer sustainable finance products and managed relationships with some of the world’s largest institutional investors.
She has also played a key role in shaping global sustainable finance standards. Odaro previously served as Chair of the ICMA Green, Social and Sustainability-Linked Bond Principles, frameworks that guide a global green and social bond market exceeding $5 trillion.
Beyond her professional roles, she has served on several boards and ESG committees across European and global companies, and has contributed to industry initiatives through organisations including ICMA, Invest Europe, the BVCA, the Sustainable Markets Initiative and the International Energy Agency (IEA).
Odaro is also preparing to publish a book on ESG in private markets investing, scheduled for release by Routledge in 2026.
At HSBC, she is expected to focus on strengthening the bank’s sustainable finance capabilities across Europe and the Americas, helping financial institutions and corporate clients develop transition strategies and governance frameworks to support the shift to a low-carbon economy.
