India’s ReNew Energy announces $9.33bn investment in clean energy

The Kerarbury Farm is expected to generate up to 14,000MWh of solar generation annually.

India’s ReNew Energy Global Plc has announced plans to invest about ₹820 billion ($9.33 billion) in the state of Andhra Pradesh to expand its clean energy operations, marking one of the company’s largest commitments to date.

The agreements, set to be signed with the state government, cover a broad range of projects including solar manufacturing, pumped hydro storage, battery systems and green ammonia production.

According to the company, ReNew will establish a 6 GW photovoltaic ingot–wafer facility, a 2 GW pumped hydro project, a green ammonia plant with a capacity of 300,000 tonnes per year, and 5 GW of hybrid renewable energy projects combining wind, solar and storage.

The investment comes as India seeks to double its non-fossil fuel generation capacity to 500 GW. Of the total commitment, ₹600 billion represents new investment, adding to the ₹220 billion pledged in May for a hybrid renewables project, the company said.

ReNew did not disclose how it intends to finance the portfolio of projects.

The company currently operates 717 MW of wind and 60 MW of solar capacity in Andhra Pradesh. It said the expansion is expected to generate more than 10,000 jobs.

Andhra Pradesh has set ambitious targets of developing 78.5 GW of solar, 35 GW of wind and 25 GWh of battery storage. ReNew, with an overall clean energy portfolio of about 18.5 GW, is among India’s largest independent power producers.
