Decarbonisation advisor ClimeCo and maritime consultancy Marsoft – Global Carbon Solutions have secured the first issuance of carbon credits for their Marsoft GreenScreen project under the Gold Standard certification framework.
The initiative represents a novel financial model for the international maritime sector, converting verified greenhouse gas reductions achieved through vessel retrofits into certified carbon credits. The resulting credit sales provide shipowners with dedicated revenue to offset the upfront capital expenditure required for energy-efficiency upgrades.
Welcoming the development, Arlie Sterling, President of Marsoft, stated: “This is the first issuance of shipping carbon credits using the latest methodology we developed in collaboration with the MIT Sea Grant Design Laboratory, marking a significant milestone for the industry. This issuance, together with others already underway, will deliver funding to accelerate the pace of retrofitting and decarbonisation.”
The international shipping sector accounts for approximately three per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions. While the International Maritime Organisation targets net-zero emissions by or around 2050, commercial deployment of zero-emission fuels remains years away from broad availability. The GreenScreen program currently includes over 350 enrolled vessels, focusing on immediate carbon reductions via existing energy-efficiency technologies.
