Microsoft and Qcells explore new energy model to power AI without burdening local grids

Solar manufacturer Qcells has expanded its strategic relationship with Microsoft to investigate new energy solutions that pair growing artificial intelligence infrastructure directly with new clean power capacity.

The initiative addresses increasing pressure on electricity grids by exploring a “bring-your-own-capacity” model. Under the proposed structure, Qcells would develop, engineer, and construct dedicated energy generation and flexible resources alongside Microsoft’s expanding data centre footprint. The generated power would be supplied directly to Microsoft or to local distribution networks, ensuring data centre demand is matched by fresh capacity to avoid shifting costs onto host communities.

As part of Microsoft’s Community-First AI Infrastructure initiative, the two firms are also evaluating Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) that aggregate residential and commercial battery systems into flexible grid resources during peak demand. Qcells intends to prioritise participation from lower-income households to distribute financial benefits through reduced electricity bills. The coordination of these distributed energy assets will rely on Microsoft’s Azure and Fabric data platforms.

Highlighting the scope of the project, Global CEO of Qcells Andy Park stated, “As AI transforms the economy, we have an opportunity to rethink how the energy infrastructure supporting it is built.” He added, “Our relationship with Microsoft began with American-made solar manufacturing and construction. Now we’re exploring how we can build the energy capacity needed for AI while creating lasting value for the communities that share the grid.”

The collaboration marks an evolution in the commercial partnership between the two companies, which began in 2023 with a 2.5-gigawatt solar module agreement and expanded in 2024 to a 12-gigawatt supply and construction deal.
