Shanghai Electric completes record-breaking biomethanol bunkering operation

Shanghai Electric Company has completed the world’s largest single biomethanol bunkering operation to date, delivering 8,000 metric tonnes of fuel at Shanghai Yangshan Port in partnership with Shanghai International Port Group and maritime carrier CMA CGM Group.

The operation relied on biomethanol supplied principally by Shanghai Electric’s Taonan green methanol facility in Jilin province. The successful delivery confirms the project’s transition into stable, commercial-scale production, supported by a newly established interprovincial supply corridor linking Jilin, Liaoning, and Shanghai. Under this logistics framework, fuel produced in Jilin is transported via Dalian Port for final delivery in Shanghai.

The Taonan facility utilises local wind, solar, and biomass resources to produce maritime-grade fuel combining green electricity and biomass processing. Moving forward, Shanghai Electric plans to expand production capacity through Phase II of the Taonan project, incorporating sustainable aviation fuel production alongside green methanol to support broader transport sector decarbonisation targets.
