Energy transition company Moeve and steel manufacturer ArcelorMittal have partnered to form a 50-50 joint platform aimed at advancing low-emissions steel production and industrial decarbonisation technologies.
Titled the Green Molecules to Green Steel (G2G) partnership, the initiative will develop, scale, and deploy industrial technologies that utilise green molecules—including renewable hydrogen and derivatives, biomethane, biogas, and second-generation biofuels—alongside CO2 capture, advanced catalysis, and biotechnology solutions.
The platform will operate as an open innovation hub managed through the R&D centres of both companies. It will be funded through internal corporate capital alongside public backing, including support from Sekuens, the Asturian Agency for Science, Business Competitiveness, and Innovation. The hub aims to build industrial demonstration projects that can be scaled up across commercial manufacturing sites.
Key strategic elements of the partnership include:
- Technology Development: Focus areas include CO2 capture and utilisation, bio-process engineering, and applying artificial intelligence to materials science and metallurgy.
- Ecosystem Acceleration: The open platform will engage startups, research universities, and technology centres to strengthen the local innovation network in Asturias and across Spain.
- Corporate Alignment: The initiative supports Moeve’s Positive Motion strategy—which includes the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley project—and ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® low-emissions steel initiatives located in Sestao and Gijón.
