Technology major Oracle has announced investments in wind energy generation projects set to deliver more than 1.7 gigawatts (GW) of carbon-free electricity across Texas.
The portfolio will supply renewable power to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) grid, directly powering Oracle’s Abilene facility. The investment is designed to support the energy-intensive expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure while bolstering regional grid resilience and maintaining power affordability for local businesses and residential communities.
Key operational metrics and procurement details include:
- Capacity and scale: The 1.7 GW investment spans 10 separate wind energy projects, developed in collaboration with suppliers including Clearway Energy, ENGIE, RWE, and Scout Clean Energy.
- Energy output: The combined wind installations are projected to generate sufficient annual electricity to power the equivalent of more than 525,000 homes.
- Emissions mitigation: Based on standard eGrid factors, the renewable generation represents an estimated 1.8 million metric tonnes of avoided CO2 emissions per year when compared to standard ERCOT grid emissions.
- Corporate targets: The procurement will propel Oracle toward its stated objective of matching 100 per cent of the electricity utilised by its Custom AI Data Centres with carbon-free power by 2035.
