ZeroMe launches OffsetC App to transparently offset consumer petrol purchases

Clean technology firm ZeroMe, Inc. has announced the official launch of OffsetC, an iPhone application designed to streamline carbon credit purchases for US consumers and climate professionals.

The platform integrates directly with registered Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover payment cards to detect fuel purchases made at petrol stations across the United States. Utilizing transactional payment data, OffsetC calculates estimated fuel volume and offers users the ability to offset the associated emissions in real time.

The service is priced at $0.23 (18p) per gallon, providing a localized carbon pricing mechanism for retail fuel consumption.

To address ongoing credibility concerns and market fragmentation within voluntary carbon markets, ZeroMe established its proprietary Carbon Quality Framework to vet carbon project sourcing.

Operational and structural features of the application include:

  • Transactional integration: Automated payment card monitoring that links point-of-sale petrol purchases with voluntary carbon credit procurement.
  • Portfolio diversification: Structuring offset purchases into a blended portfolio combining lower-cost avoided emission projects with higher-cost, high-durability permanent carbon removal technologies.
  • Verification and transparency: Standardized disclosure of project methodologies, third-party verification, and performance monitoring data to build market trust.
  • Reduction primacy: Educational guidance emphasizing that voluntary carbon offsetting should complement, rather than replace, direct behavioral emissions reductions.

Chris Sandlund, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of ZeroMe, stated that market transparency and clear project performance metrics are essential prerequisites for expanding retail participation in voluntary carbon markets.

Sandlund added that aggregating consumer demand through transaction-linked micro-purchases can help finance emerging carbon removal technologies and lower their unit cost curves over time.
