ABN AMRO and Aviva Investors commit €100m to SL Materials

ABN AMRO Sustainable Impact Fund (SIF) and Aviva Investors have committed €100 million ($111 million) in follow-on funding to Dutch circular concrete company SL Materials, formerly operating as Urban Mine.

The capital injection coincides with the company’s corporate rebranding and will finance the expansion of its existing processing facility in Zaandam, Netherlands, alongside the development of new production sites across Europe.

SL Materials utilises proprietary technology, including its Smart Liberator and Smart Refiner systems, to process demolition waste. The process recovers high-purity cementitious materials, sand, and gravel, enabling the direct manufacturing of new structural concrete while reducing quarrying demand and embodied carbon emissions within the construction sector.

Strategic and operational objectives for the expansion include:

  • Capacity scaling: Expanding processing throughput at the Zaandam plant to meet growing commercial demand for low-carbon building materials.
  • Geographic expansion: Developing additional recovery and refining sites across primary European construction markets.
  • Technology optimisation: Funding continued research and development to enhance material recovery yields and concrete performance metrics.

Maarten Blomme, Head of Corporate Investments at ABN AMRO, stated that circular concrete has the potential to become the standard material across the building industry. He added that supporting SL Materials’ scaling plans aligns with ABN AMRO’s broader strategy to accelerate the transition towards a circular, resource-efficient economy.
