BlackRock launches downside-protected UK pension equity fund with ESG insights

BlackRock has launched the BlackRock ACS World ESG Insights Protective Strategies fund, marking the introduction of the first downside-protected equity fund on its UK retirement platform.

The fund is structured primarily for UK pension schemes, with a focus on defined contribution (DC) plans managing assets for members approaching retirement. The strategy is designed as a complement to traditional de-risking models, which typically reduce equity exposure near retirement at the expense of potential capital growth.

The fund invests through BlackRock’s established World ESG Insights equity strategy, providing global equity exposure integrated with sustainability criteria, including targets to reduce portfolio carbon emissions intensity. Consequently, the asset pool falls within the scope of BlackRock Investment Stewardship’s Climate and Decarbonization Stewardship programme.

Key structural, operational, and risk-management details include:

  • Options-based overlay: Utilises an options-based derivative strategy to mitigate significant equity market declines. Unlike conventional protection models that write or sell call options, the fund purchases call options to preserve uncapped upside market participation.
  • Management and oversight: Managed by BlackRock’s diversified strategies team, which brings over two decades of derivatives-based risk management experience in multi-asset portfolios.
  • Risk analytics platform: Independent oversight is provided by BlackRock’s risk and quantitative analysis group, utilizing the firm’s proprietary Aladdin risk management platform.
  • Target audience: Serves institutional DC and Defined Benefit (DB) pension schemes, alongside expanding wealth management channels seeking equity resilience.

Adam Ryan, Head of Diversified Strategies at BlackRock, stated that traditional methods of achieving downside protection often required capping participation in equity market gains.

Ryan added that by balancing downside mitigation with uncapped participation, the new fund offers institutional clients greater flexibility to navigate market volatility without sacrificing long-term equity growth potential.
