Technology group ABB has obtained Type III Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification for six of its industrial sensors, marking a industry first for the sector.
Based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies, an EPD provides independently verified data detailing a product’s environmental footprint across its entire operational life cycle. Unlike self-declared Type II statements, Type III EPDs undergo third-party verification by qualified assessors in accordance with established Product Category Rules (PCR).
The certifications follow work led by ABB in 2025 to establish the Complementary PCR (c-PCR) framework specifically for the industrial sensor segment, adapting broader rules from the electrical and electronic equipment category.
The six ABB products securing initial Type III certification include:
- Pressure Transmitters: PGS300 and PDS300 models.
- Flowmeters: AquaMaster and FSV450 Vortex flowmeters.
- Transmitters & Positioners: AWT420 universal 4-wire transmitter and TZIDC positioner.
These sensing instruments support operational control, safety, and efficiency across process industries, including chemical processing, oil and gas operations, and water and wastewater management.

The availability of verified life cycle metrics is designed to assist industrial operators with environmental reporting obligations, sustainable procurement criteria, and regulatory compliance disclosures.
