Amazon has announced a $20 million investment in water conservation across the Colorado River Basin as part of a corporate coalition aiming to raise $100 million over two years.
The newly launched Colorado River Basin Collaborative (CRBC), established alongside the Water Resilience Coalition and supported by The Climate Pledge, brings together major corporations to fund conservation efforts across a watershed facing prolonged drought. Participating entities include Aldi, The Coca-Cola Foundation, Ecolab, EdgeConneX, Grundfos, Vantage, and Xylem, which together have committed over $32 million to date.
The Colorado River supplies water to approximately 40 million residents, 5.5 million acres of farmland, and 30 tribal nations across seven US states and Mexico. Following a 25-year drought, the river’s major reservoirs currently operate at below 30 per cent capacity, generating an estimated annual supply deficit of nearly one trillion gallons.
Rather than aggregating capital into a centralized fund, member organizations will contract directly with vetted project teams across the basin to accelerate capital deployment. Initial deployments funded through Amazon’s contribution include:
- Orange County leak detection: A $2.2 million, three-year investment with the Municipal Water District of Orange County in California to expand municipal leak detection and repair in underfunded communities, targeting annual savings of 189 million gallons.
- Agricultural tech on tribal lands: A $2.4 million project with agricultural technology firm Arable to deploy sensors powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS) on tribal farmland in the Lower Colorado River Basin. The real-time irrigation monitoring system aims to lower water extraction from Lake Mead, with projected savings of 238 million gallons per year.
Kara Hurst, Chief Sustainability Officer at Amazon, stated that the initiative applies a collaborative corporate model to address water security and climate resilience, with project deployments scheduled to run through 2028.
The daily operations, project vetting, and performance tracking of the CRBC will be managed by the Water Resilience Coalition, an initiative housed within the Pacific Institute.
