Environmental disclosure platform CDP has published its SME Disclosure Data Insights 2026 report, evaluating environmental governance, risk management, and decarbonisation efforts across nearly 11,000 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) globally.
The findings highlight that while SMEs account for roughly 90 per cent of businesses worldwide and 60 per cent of global commercial greenhouse gas emissions, a substantial gap persists between structural preparation and concrete climate action.
According to the analysis, over 95 per cent of reporting SMEs demonstrated progress against at least one fundamental environmental indicator. However, only 20 per cent have established formal emissions reduction targets, and just 32 per cent have operational reduction initiatives active.
Key operational metrics and regional insights include:
- Transition planning: While only 15 per cent of SMEs currently maintain a formal transition plan, 63 per cent either possess a plan or expect to formulate one within two years.
- Regional disparities: European firms led global performance rankings—driven by Spain, France, and Sweden—supported by standardized voluntary SME reporting frameworks (VSME). Conversely, SMEs in Singapore and the United States exhibited the lowest progress, with a majority meeting few or none of the assessed criteria.
- Sectoral variation: SMEs within heavy industries—including Manufacturing, Materials, Transportation Services, and Power Generation—showed the strongest foundational alignment, outperforming consumer-facing sectors such as Retail and Services.
- Financial incentives: Referencing joint research with HSBC, CDP noted that supply chain vendors are 52 per cent more likely to reduce annual emissions when corporate buyers provide direct financial incentives rather than relying solely on educational training.
Simon Fischweicher, Chief Customer Success Officer at CDP, stated that while SMEs are establishing necessary governance frameworks, corporate buyers, financial institutions, and policymakers must provide accessible finance and practical mechanisms to convert planning into measurable emissions reductions.
