The European Commission has publicly presented the EU Water Resilience Investment Accelerator, an advisory initiative launched under InvestEU and funded by the LIFE programme.
The initiative aims to address Europe’s estimated €23 billion annual water investment gap—representing 0.1 per cent of EU gross domestic product—required to implement existing water legislation and strengthen regional climate resilience.
Managed via Green Assist (the Green Advisory Service for Sustainable Investments Support), the accelerator will fund advisory support for 20 pilot projects focused on natural water retention, clean water technologies, and systemic water efficiency.
The program prioritizes private-sector capital mobilization, scalable business models, and creative funding structures to improve project bankability across Member States.
Key operational focus areas and eligibility parameters include:
- Water efficiency & smart solutions: Funding technologies that optimize industrial and municipal water usage, reduce distribution losses, and expand circular water recycling systems.
- Nature-based solutions: Supporting projects that utilize natural retention systems to improve flood mitigation, drought adaptation, and local biodiversity.
- Clean water technologies: Advancing systemic treatment frameworks to reduce pollutant emissions and improve regional water quality.
- Target beneficiaries: Focuses on EU-based small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), start-ups, agricultural producers, and local municipal authorities.
The accelerator represents a core operational component under the European Commission’s broader Water Resilience Strategy, which targets ecosystem restoration, a water-smart regional economy, and universal access to clean sanitation.
Project developers and public-private entities seeking non-repayable advisory services can submit applications to the Commission through late October via the Green Assist portal.
