RWE U.S. Offshore has reached a settlement agreement with the US Department of the Interior to resolve legal claims against the federal government and formally relinquish its offshore wind lease holdings off the coasts of New York, California, and Louisiana.
The settlement resolves legal disputes following a determination that no viable permitting path exists for the projects in the US for the foreseeable future. Under the terms of the agreement, RWE will receive $1.22 billion in settlement funds, allowing the company to reallocate capital toward higher-certainty energy developments across the American market. RWE had previously invested over $1 billion into lease acquisitions and early-stage project development.
RWE Americas plans to redirect its capital toward flexible power generation and gas infrastructure to address expanding electricity demand across the United States. Key upcoming capital allocations include:
- Louisiana LNG Project: A $900 million financial investment to acquire an indirect 16% stake, with proceeds directly funding terminal construction.
- Natural Gas Turbines: A $300 million turbine reservation agreement to secure future generating capacity, supporting a development pipeline of 15 natural gas peaking projects across targeted US markets.
RWE Americas reaffirmed its broader commitment to the US energy sector, outlining plans to invest approximately €17 billion over the next six years. The strategy aims to expand its total operational capacity from 13 gigawatts (GW) across 27 states to 22 GW by 2031, following the commissioning of 2 GW of new capacity in 2025.
Globally, RWE will continue expanding its offshore wind footprint outside the US market. The group currently operates 18 offshore wind farms globally, with four under construction and further capacity in development, including 6.9 GW secured during the UK’s most recent offshore wind auction.
