AirTrunk secures $2.3bn green loan for hyperscale data centre in Malaysia

Hyperscale data centre specialist AirTrunk has secured $2.325 billion in green financing to fund the development of its JHB2 campus in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. The transaction marks the largest green project finance deal for a single data centre in Malaysia and stands as AirTrunk’s largest single-asset financing to date.

The funding will support the sustainable expansion of infrastructure designed to underpin Malaysia’s expanding artificial intelligence and cloud computing sectors. The JHB2 facility is engineered to meet rigorous efficiency metrics, aiming for a design Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.37 alongside advanced water-efficient cooling systems.

The syndicate backing the loan comprises 30 regional and international financial institutions, led by ten Global Coordinators including BNP Paribas, DBS Bank, HSBC, and Société Générale. The deal also represents AirTrunk’s initial partnership with the International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group.

In line with the company’s sustainability commitments, margin savings generated through the financing mechanism will fund social impact initiatives across Malaysia. These programmes include school-based water recycling projects alongside partnerships with MERCY Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

Pei Jet Lim, Vice President and Country Head for Malaysia at AirTrunk, emphasised that the transaction highlights how digital infrastructure can expand responsibly. Senior Director of Treasury Loans Edmund Tan added that the facility features transparent environmental performance targets aligned with the firm’s ambition to achieve net-zero operations by 2030.
