Amazon, fashion brand Stella McCartney, and environmental non-profit Canopy have announced the launch of The Climate Pledge Fashion Coalition, an international initiative designed to scale sustainable materials and reduce supply chain emissions.
Supported by convening assistance from the World Economic Forum, the coalition unites over 60 Climate Pledge signatories—including fashion labels, textile manufacturers, component innovators, and retailers—in a joint effort to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Participating entities include Anna Sui, Brooks Running, Circ, Selfridges, and Vestiaire Collective.
The global fashion sector is estimated to generate between two and eight per cent of world greenhouse gas emissions, consume 79 trillion litres of water, and produce over 92 million tonnes of textile waste annually. While lower-footprint materials exist, adoption remains limited due to high production costs, supply fragmentation, and limited commercial scale.
The coalition aims to address these barriers by targeting early-stage product life cycles, focusing on recycled feedstocks, next-generation waste-derived fibres, and manufacturing processes that reduce water, chemical, and energy requirements.
The framework operates through three primary mechanisms:
- Blended financing structures: In collaboration with the World Economic Forum, the coalition aggregates demand across supply chain tiers and combines development finance de-risking tools with private capital. This model provides material innovators with long-term volume commitments, allowing for competitive pricing at earlier development stages.
- Solution integration: The coalition has established the Fashion Coalition Lever Library, a digital tool developed alongside 30 brands and suppliers containing over 100 technological solutions, fiber-by-fiber guidelines, and an innovator directory. It also leverages Canopy’s Next Gen Now platform to connect brands with commercial-ready materials.
- Policy guidance: Demonstrating scalable, production-stage innovations to provide empirical data for future environmental policymaking.
Kara Hurst, Chief Sustainability Officer at Amazon, stated that the initiative aims to unite brands, suppliers, and innovators to deliver sustainable options at scale.
Stella McCartney, founder and creative director, added that the coalition focuses on transforming material breakthroughs into industry-standard infrastructure by building sustained commercial demand.
Co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism in 2019, The Climate Pledge currently includes over 700 signatory organisations across 60 sectors.
