Google and Constellation Energy announce 20-year deal to unlock 890 MW of nuclear capacity

Google and Constellation Energy have entered into a 20-year strategic clean energy partnership to bring 890 megawatts (MW) of new nuclear generation capacity to the PJM Interconnection grid, supporting rising power demand across the US Mid-Atlantic and Midwest.

Under the power purchase agreement, Constellation will invest more than $4.3 billion to upgrade equipment and digital control systems across 11 nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. These uprates will enhance thermal and electrical efficiency to generate new firm capacity without the multi-year timelines or interconnection delays associated with greenfield plant construction.

The agreement supports approximately 4,400 existing nuclear operations jobs and is projected to create roughly 7,200 construction jobs during the upgrade phase, with the initial uprate expected to come online by 2028.

Alongside the capacity expansion, the two companies established a 15-year financial agreement covering 2,700 MW of Constellation’s existing generation fleet, providing revenue certainty to keep operating nuclear assets active in the regional power market.

Key commercial and technical elements of the collaboration include:

  • Grid integration & demand response: Incorporating operational load-shaping and demand-response protocols to allow Google to curtail non-critical computing loads during periods of severe grid stress.
  • Capital market model: Aligning with PJM’s “Bring Your Own Power” framework and the US Ratepayer Protection Pledge by financing supply expansions through private corporate capital rather than residential rate increases.
  • Technology alliance: Deploying Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise across Constellation’s operations to optimise nuclear asset dispatch, streamline site permitting, and secure operational technology (OT) networks against cyber threats.
  • Future clean energy framework: Establishing a joint framework to evaluate future developments in clean generation, energy storage, and grid flexibility tools across the United States.

Amanda Peterson Corio, Global Head of Energy and Power at Google, stated that funding nuclear reactor uprates enables the company to meet digital infrastructure growth responsibly while supporting regional grid stability and local union employment across the 67 million people served by PJM.

Joe Dominguez, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Constellation, added that combining private capital with nuclear infrastructure upgrades provides a scalable blueprint for technology firms and utility providers to expand the energy supply while protecting ratepayer affordability.
