Artificial intelligence research company Anthropic has announced the creation of the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, committing an initial 5 per cent of its corporate shares to the new entity subject to shareholder approval. The fund’s governance structure includes a scaling mechanism that allows the board to dedicate an additional 2 per cent of company equity for every 50 per cent increase in corporate valuation above an established baseline.
The fund is structured as a wholly-owned limited liability company (LLC) rather than a traditional non-profit entity to maintain operational flexibility across direct distributions, research grants, and non-profit donations. Anthropic confirmed that equity held by the fund will be strictly prohibited from funding domestic or international political contributions and lobbying activities.
The primary operational mandate of the new fund includes addressing AI-driven labor market disruptions, supporting applied scientific research, and funding economic stabilization initiatives. Anthropic previously allocated $200 million toward labor market research, but noted that escalating AI progress requires broader capital distribution mechanisms.
Combined with existing co-founder pledges to donate 80 per cent of their personal equity holdings and an ongoing employee equity-matching programme, approximately 20 per cent of total Anthropic shares are now allocated toward public benefit initiatives. The company plans to release further details regarding governance structures, valuation baselines, and its annual public benefit report in the coming months.
