CIP to invest in Italian biomethane platform Via Verde

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), acting through its Advanced Bioenergy Fund II (ABF II), has reached a final investment decision (FID) on Via Verde, an Italian biomethane platform.

The transaction marks ABF II’s inaugural investment and establishes CIP’s entry into the Italian biomethane sector. ABF II focuses primarily on developing, constructing, and operating European biogas facilities that process agricultural waste and organic feedstocks into biomethane to replace imported natural gas.

The Via Verde portfolio comprises a development pipeline of 20 strategically located projects across Italian regions including Lombardy, Abruzzo, and Campania. Each plant is engineered to process between 60,000 and 100,000 tonnes of agricultural waste per year.

Operational and strategic features of the investment include:

  • Generation capacity: Upon full commercial operation across all 20 sites, the platform will supply approximately 1 TWh of biomethane annually—equivalent to the gas consumption of roughly 60,000 Italian households.
  • Energy security: Domestic production directly offsets imported fossil gas, supporting Italian energy independence and national decarbonisation commitments.
  • Economic footprint: The construction and operational rollout will generate local technical and agricultural supply chain employment across host regions.
  • Market Ppolicy alignment: The investment leverages supportive domestic policy frameworks established to meet Italy’s 2030 renewable gas targets.

Andreas F. Brandt, Partner at CIP, stated that Via Verde provides a strong operational foundation in one of Europe’s premier biomethane markets, combining CIP’s bioenergy execution capabilities with experienced local management.

Brandt added that renewable gas infrastructure will play a central role in enhancing regional energy security while advancing the broader low-carbon energy transition across Southern Europe.
