Italian energy major Eni and Algerian state company SONATRACH have signed a new Memorandum of Intent to expand their joint decarbonisation efforts, targeting reduced emissions and broader environmental initiatives across Algeria’s oil and gas sector.
Building upon a three-year agreement established in January 2023, the updated framework expands the scope of collaboration between the two energy firms. Key additions include joint natural carbon dioxide removal initiatives through large-scale forestry projects, alongside enhanced protocols for monitoring, quantifying, and mitigating methane emissions in accordance with international industry standards.
The initial 2023 agreement established structured programmes combining technical analyses, capacity-building workshops, and joint field inspections to identify greenhouse gas reduction opportunities.
Notable outcomes from the ongoing collaboration include a joint Leak Detection and Repair campaign spanning 800 kilometres of pipeline infrastructure, which monitored approximately 7,500 inspection points to curb fugitive emissions. Standardised measurement procedures are now deployed routinely across all joint ventures operated by the two companies in Algeria. Furthermore, baseline emissions evaluations have been completed across six joint upstream assets.
The partnership has also identified future initiatives spanning flaring reduction, energy efficiency enhancements, carbon capture, utilisation, and storage assessments, alongside renewable energy development. Present in Algeria since 1981, Eni recorded net production of approximately 132,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in the country in 2025. The latest memorandum reinforces both organisations’ commitments to implementing practical, low-carbon technologies across Algeria’s energy supply chain.
