Ingka Group, the largest retailer within the IKEA franchise system, has completed the acquisition of its first two solar parks in Spain. The move represents a major step forward in the company’s strategy to strengthen its clean energy presence across the Iberian Peninsula, which it has designated as a high-priority market.
The new Spanish assets join Ingka Group’s extensive global green energy portfolio, backed by more than €4.3 billion in completed or committed investments worldwide.
The acquisitions, managed via the company’s investment arm, Ingka Investments, comprise two distinct assets. The first is “La Oliva”, an operational solar farm located in Villasequilla, Toledo, which generates an estimated 51 GWh annually. The second site in Los Alcázares, Murcia, is projected to add a further 55 GWh per year. Combined, the two facilities will inject 106 GWh of renewable electricity into the Spanish grid each year.
Frederik de Jong, Head of Renewable Energy at Ingka Investments, highlighted the strategic timing of the purchase, noting that as Europe continues to face energy price volatility and supply uncertainty, these projects reinforce regional resilience. He added that Spain’s exceptional solar conditions allow the firm to contribute meaningfully to local production and cross-border grid strength, supporting a more reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy system for the long term.
The investment forms part of a broader, long-term commitment to the Iberian energy sector. In tandem with the Spanish acquisitions, Ingka Investments is currently hybridising its existing wind farm in Portugal by integrating solar panels. This technological upgrade is designed to boost overall output, enhance grid stability, and maximise the utility of existing infrastructure.
With the addition of the Spanish solar parks and the Portuguese hybrid project, Ingka Investments’ total renewable energy production in Iberia will scale to 323 GWh annually, with the company actively targeting further expansion in the region.
Karen Pflug, Chief Sustainability Officer of Ingka Group, emphasised that expanding Europe’s renewable capacity is essential for both climate progress and security. She stated that as a global retailer, the company believes it is vital to help build energy resilience and flexibility in the regions where it operates.
