The largest battery energy storage system (BESS) project in the Nordic region has officially entered commercial operation in Ånge, Sweden. The 70 MW / 160 MWh facility was developed by Delta Capacity and incorporates Sungrow’s PowerTitan 2.0 utility BESS technology, engineered to maintain high reliability and efficiency despite extreme Nordic weather conditions and severe temperature fluctuations.
Located in bidding zone SE2, the Ånge facility is designed to stabilise the Swedish power grid by providing rapid response capabilities, frequency regulation, and capacity for energy arbitrage within the volatile Nordic electricity market. Sweden’s grid flexibility market has grown rapidly, aided by regulatory structures that allow battery storage assets to generate revenue through balancing markets. Industry figures from SolarPower Europe show that Sweden and Finland combined installed over 1 GWh of new battery capacity during 2025.
The project is owned by a joint venture between the WOOD & Company Renewables Sub-Fund and Delta Capacity, the latter managing the build from initial design through to completion. The transition from procurement start to full commercial operation was achieved within a 15-month timeframe, following the acquisition of the project from RES in February 2025.
Reflecting on the milestone, Samer Nameer, Country Manager Sweden at Sungrow, noted that the Ånge installation demonstrates how large-scale energy storage can be delivered rapidly and at scale with partners such as Delta Capacity to support Sweden’s renewable energy capacity.
Patrik Hes, Chief Executive Officer of Delta Capacity, highlighted that whilst Sweden possesses strong renewable energy resources, grid flexibility remains crucial. He stated that the delivery of 160 MWh of storage within 15 months aligns with the business’s goal to build infrastructure at an accelerated pace to match the speed of the Nordic energy transition.
A range of industry partners contributed to the construction and operation of the facility, including Stenger & Ibsen Construction, Rejlers, Green Power Monitor, Solvina, and Ellevio. Continuous around-the-clock power trading and electricity management for the facility are handled by Centrica Energy.
