Ørsted secures 100% ownership of 172 MW UK wind farm

Danish energy major Ørsted has exercised a long-standing buyback right to acquire the remaining 49.9 per cent stake in the Gunfleet Sands 1 & 2 Offshore Wind Farm from its investment partners.

The transaction values the minority equity interest at approximately £15 million ($19 million). Upon expected completion in November 2026, subject to customary closing conditions, Ørsted will increase its ownership interest from 50.1 per cent to 100 per cent.

Taking full operational and financial control of the 172-megawatt (MW) asset—located seven kilometres off the Essex coast in the UK—will allow Ørsted to optimize asset management and evaluate late-life options, including potential operational lifetime extensions.

Key operational metrics and asset details include:

  • Generating capacity: 172 MW, producing sufficient renewable electricity to power more than 125,000 UK households annually.
  • Operational track record: In continuous commercial operation since 2010, forming part of Ørsted’s 12-project operational UK offshore wind fleet.
  • Strategic flexibility: Consolidating ownership enables streamlined operations and direct control over future repowering or extension decisions.
  • Market position: Ørsted’s existing UK operational fleet currently generates approximately 7 per cent of the UK’s total electricity supply.

Richard Bodal Hansen, UK Country Manager at Ørsted, stated that acquiring full ownership allows the group to maximize asset performance and build additional long-term value from a mature operational site.

Ørsted noted that exercising the contractual buyback right aligns with its broader strategy to optimize its operating portfolio, adding that it will continue evaluating similar partnership buyback opportunities on a case-by-case basis.
