CORSIA emissions supply alliance swells to 50 participants

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced that the number of entities participating in the Supporting Alliance for CORSIA Eligible Emissions Unit (EEU) Supply has reached 50, bolstered by key government and industry additions.

The governments of Guyana, Madagascar, the United Kingdom, Zambia, and Zimbabwe have officially signed the Aviation Carbon Market Compact to join the alliance, while Peru and several other nations have expressed formal interest. Concurrently, the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), the Verified Carbon Market Collaborative, data provider Sylvera, and Airbus have joined to offer technical and financial backing.

The primary objective of the alliance is to scale up the supply of high-quality emissions units for the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). The sector anticipates a demand of 225 million to 250 million CORSIA EEUs by spring 2027. To meet this target, the coalition is pooling resources to accelerate EEU supply, assisting countries in aligning their UN Nationally Determined Contributions with CORSIA requirements, and improving global access to carbon finance.

Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA’s Senior Vice President Sustainability and Chief Economist, stated that the growing engagement across the carbon market value chain demonstrates a shared commitment to connecting market demand with necessary policy frameworks. She emphasised the determination among participants to bring EEUs to market at the required speed and scale.

Alexia Kelly, representing the Verified Carbon Market Collaborative via the High Tide Foundation, noted that the alliance’s coordinated assistance is timely and essential for host countries to authorize credits and access carbon markets as CORSIA comes into force. Dirk Forrister, President and CEO of IETA, added that the success of the scheme relies heavily on this type of cross-sector collaboration to unlock the full potential of Article 6 and global aviation decarbonisation.
