Plug Power Inc. has announced the dispatch of a 1-megawatt GenEco PEM electrolyzer to HWR Hydrogen, a division of H.W. Richardson Group Limited, expanding the technology provider’s presence across New Zealand and Australia.
The electrolyzer unit will be deployed at HWR Hydrogen’s refuelling facility in Invercargill, New Zealand, generating green hydrogen to power HWR’s commercial fleet of dual-fuel hydrogen-diesel heavy trucks.
The deployment builds upon Plug’s existing infrastructure footprint in New Zealand, where its electrolyzer technology supports Hiringa Energy’s national green hydrogen refuelling network. In Australia, the company was previously selected to supply a 50MW GenEco PEM electrolyzer system for the Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub operated by Orica.
José Luis Crespo, Chief Executive Officer of Plug, stated that the Invercargill installation reflects growing regional momentum for hydrogen technology across transportation and industrial applications.
Gareth Wishart, General Manager of Technology and Innovation at HWR, noted that the Plug equipment will initially supply hydrogen for dual-fuel trucks operated by HWR and regional customers across Southland. He added that the facility will also accommodate original equipment manufacturer (OEM) hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles as commercial adoption expands across New Zealand’s South Island.
Once operational, the local production facility aims to establish foundational infrastructure for heavy transport decarbonisation across the Southland region.
