re.green issues first native-species carbon credits in the Atlantic Forest

Brazilian ecological restoration company re.green has issued its first batch of carbon credits certified by Verra, generated entirely from the restoration of the Atlantic Forest using native tree species. The milestone delivers the first results of five years of operational work and establishes a new precedent for the Brazilian nature-based solutions model.

The initial batch comprises 36,877 carbon removal credits, stemming from the recovery of more than 1,600 hectares of degraded land in the southern Bahia municipalities of Eunápolis and Potiraguá between 2022 and 2025. The project utilized exclusive native species including jequitibá-rosa, ipê, pau-brasil, and jatobá. This issuance forms part of a larger initial crop of more than 120,000 carbon removal credits that re.green plans to roll out across the Atlantic Forest and the Amazon biomes in the coming months.

Thiago Picolo, Chief Executive Officer of re.green, stated that the issuance validates the company’s core thesis that native forests can be restored at scale in Brazil with scientific rigour, high integrity, and economic sustainability. He noted that the initiative represents a landmark for the voluntary carbon market as the first large-scale forest restoration project using native species in the Atlantic Forest to issue credits under international standards.

The restoration model aims to capture carbon whilst simultaneously improving regional water availability, enhancing natural habitats for local wildlife, and strengthening seed and seedling supply chains. On a socioeconomic level, re.green’s initiatives have supported nearly 900 people through training, income generation, and productive inclusion.

The company currently manages over 37,000 hectares across the Amazon and Atlantic Forest biomes—with 20,000 hectares already planted—and maintains commercial partnerships with corporations including Microsoft, Nestlé, Agro Penido, and Vivo. re.green is a certified B Corporation and holds top-tier environmental ratings, including a “Dark Green” rating from S&P Global, an AA- rating from BeZero Carbon for its Atlantic Forest projects, and recognition as a 2025 Earthshot Prize winner.
