Following the operationalisation of Indonesia’s national carbon market, independent carbon crediting programme Verra has announced it is preparing to issue at least 20 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in emission reductions to three domestic forestry projects.
The milestone follows the Katingan Peatland Restoration and Conservation Project, the Sumatra Merang Peatland Project, and The Mayas Project successfully fulfilling all updated regulatory criteria and securing formal authorization from the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry. Under the revised framework, domestic forestry initiatives must register with and obtain ministry approval to ensure strict alignment with the nation’s climate accounting and Nationally Determined Contribution commitments.
To ensure long-term transparency, Verra and the Ministry of Forestry, alongside other Indonesian government agencies, are collaborating to build an application programming interface (API) link. This connection will allow seamless data sharing and ensure that credits issued by Verra are accurately tracked within Indonesia’s domestic registry for national climate reporting.
Mandy Rambharos, Chief Executive Officer of Verra, congratulated the Indonesian government on developing a model that marries national oversight with global market interoperability. She noted that combining an independent crediting programme with a transparent domestic registry instils greater confidence in buyers and developers, helping scale emission reductions whilst directing climate finance to local communities.
Laksmi Wijayanti, Director General of Sustainable Forest Management at the Ministry of Forestry, hailed the upcoming issuance as a significant step forward for the country’s climate and sustainable development agenda. She emphasised that aligning international best practices with robust domestic oversight proves that high-integrity carbon markets can deliver measurable emissions reductions whilst maintaining absolute national accountability.
Once the final administrative steps are concluded via the integrated data-sharing framework, Verra will officially complete the approval process and release the corresponding credits to the market.
