Google, MN8 Energy, and Eos partner on West Virginia hybrid solar and long-duration storage project

Power platform MN8 Energy, zinc-based battery manufacturer Eos Energy Enterprises, and Google have announced a joint collaboration to deploy an integrated solar and energy storage project in Kanawha County, West Virginia, supplying dispatchable carbon-free electricity to the regional PJM grid.

Owned and operated by MN8, the Mammoth Solar project will combine 86 MW of utility-scale solar generation with two distinct battery storage technologies: a 70 MW/280 MWh lithium-ion system and a 10 MW/100 MWh long-duration energy storage (LDES) system utilizing Eos’ Z3 aqueous zinc-based technology.

Under the agreement, Google will purchase the project’s total energy, capacity, and clean energy attributes to power its regional data centre infrastructure, including a planned facility in West Virginia. The solar component is projected to reach commercial operation in 2028, with the lithium-ion and long-duration storage installations following in 2029 and 2030, respectively.

The deployment represents the first commercial-scale long-duration energy storage installation in West Virginia, utilizing a 10-hour duration zinc battery system designed to extend solar generation availability beyond traditional short-duration storage windows.

Z3 extends the value of clean generation across more hours, strengthens the overall portfolio, and delivers more dependable capacity when it’s needed most.”

Constructed on a former coal mine site, the project represents an estimated $350 million capital investment. MN8 projects the facility will generate approximately $4 million in property tax revenue for local schools and county services during its first 20 years of operation, while creating around 200 construction jobs alongside long-term operational roles.
