GE Vernova’s Electrification business has secured a contract to supply Sweden’s first sulfur hexafluoride (SF6)-free gas-insulated switchgear to utility operator Vattenfall Eldistribution AB.
The equipment will be installed at the Lindhov substation in Tumba, situated approximately 25 kilometres from central Stockholm. The contract encompasses the design, engineering, delivery, installation, and commissioning of eight bays of GE Vernova’s 145 kV g3 switchgear.
The installation replaces conventional SF6—a potent greenhouse gas historically used in high-voltage electrical equipment—with GE Vernova’s proprietary g3 gas alternative. The alternative mixture reduces global warming potential by approximately 99% compared to traditional SF6 insulation whilst maintaining identical spatial dimensions and operational performance.
The compactness of fluoronitrile-based gas technology makes it suitable for urban substations where space constraints preclude larger alternative solutions. To date, 25 major electrical utilities globally have integrated g3 gas technology into their high-voltage transmission networks, avoiding the addition of more than one million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent to the grid.
