Hitachi Energy digital sustainability platform to quantify grid project carbon footprints

At the WindEurope conference in Madrid, Hitachi Energy has launched EcoSpace™, a digital sustainability platform designed to quantify and visualise the environmental impact of power grid projects. The platform aims to provide utilities, developers, and investors with real-time, data-driven insights to manage the increasing demand for transparent and strategic sustainability reporting.

Part of the recently launched HMAX Energy portfolio—Hitachi’s AI-powered suite for energy infrastructure—EcoSpace analyses the complete lifecycle of grid systems. From raw materials and logistics to installation and operations, the platform enables users to assess carbon impacts and compare alternative project scenarios via intuitive dashboards.

The platform’s methodology has received endorsement from DNV, an independent certification body, ensuring the credibility of the metrics used for stakeholder reporting and public tenders.

“EcoSpace transforms complex sustainability data into real-time, decision-ready insight,” the company stated, noting that the tool helps transition sustainability from a simple compliance exercise into a strategic business advantage.

The technology has already been successfully piloted in collaboration with Statnett, Norway’s transmission system operator. At a 420-kilovolt (kV) substation in Oslo, the application of EcoSpace identified pathways to achieve a 20 per cent reduction in the system’s total carbon footprint over its 30-year lifespan.

By embedding these metrics into every phase of a project, the platform addresses the industry’s need for robust CO2 reporting along the entire value chain. The rollout is supported by Hitachi Energy’s Power Consulting team, providing specialist advisory to ensure projects remain bankable and compliant with evolving global regulations.
