Mangrove Systems acquire Grain Ecosystem assets

Mangrove Systems (Mangrove) has announced the acquisition of select operating assets from Grain Ecosystem (Grain), a digital project development platform prominent in the North American biochar sector. The deal will see Grain’s entire customer base of biochar operators transition onto Mangrove’s compliance and monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) platform.

The transaction consolidates Mangrove’s position in the rapidly expanding carbon dioxide removal (CDR) market. By absorbing Grain’s portfolio, Mangrove now oversees a significant share of the global operational biochar market, strengthening its infrastructure for carbon removal at scale.

“Biochar is one of the most promising and fastest-growing segments of the carbon removal market, and this acquisition deepens our commitment to it,” said Annie Nichols, General Manager of Biochar at Mangrove Systems. “We’re proud to welcome Grain’s operators onto our platform and to support them with the MRV infrastructure they need to scale.”

Operators moving from the Grain platform will gain access to Mangrove’s advanced suite of tools, including AI-assisted carbon accounting, automated data ingestion, and audit-ready reporting. These capabilities are designed to streamline certification across both voluntary and compliance-led carbon programmes.

Ryan J. Letourneau, Co-Founder and CEO of Grain Ecosystem, noted that the move ensures long-term stability for its users. “Grain has built a strong platform and market presence in the biochar sector, and we believe Mangrove is well positioned to carry that work forward,” he said. “This transaction provides continuity for customers and reflects a strong fit between what Grain built and Mangrove’s long-term platform.”

The move highlights a broader trend of consolidation within the climate-tech sector as platforms seek to provide more robust, end-to-end compliance solutions for carbon removal projects.
