NYK Bulkship (Asia) Pte. Ltd. (NYK Line), Golden Island Pte. Ltd., and Yara Clean Ammonia Norge AS have signed a non-binding term sheet to jointly explore the marketing and supply of low-carbon ammonia as a marine fuel in Singapore. The partnership aims to establish a reliable supply chain to support the shipping industry’s transition toward zero-or-near-zero-emission (ZNZ) fuels.
The collaboration leverages the distinct strengths of each partner to address the logistical and technical challenges of ammonia bunkering. NYK Line provides technical expertise from its ammonia-fuelled vessel projects and LNG bunkering operations, while Golden Island contributes over 40 years of experience in Singapore’s bunkering market and supply chain coordination. Yara Clean Ammonia, a global leader in the sector, brings extensive knowledge in the production, handling, and safe transport of ammonia.
Discussions for the venture began in early 2024, with the partners targeting the commencement of bunkering operations within this decade.
“The NYK Group recognizes the transition to ZNZ marine fuels as a critical step towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050,” said Atsuya Nojiri, Managing Director of NYK Bulkship (Asia). “Our primary objective is to establish the infrastructure required to safely accelerate the adoption and scaling of ammonia-fuelled vessels.”
Johnny Tan, Managing Director of Golden Island, emphasised the company’s role in the transition, noting their history with VLSFO, biofuels, and methanol. “Through this partnership, we look forward to contributing our operational capabilities and high safety standards to support Singapore’s development as a global hub for next-generation marine fuels,” he said.
Murali Srinivasan, SVP Commercial at Yara Clean Ammonia, described the agreement as a milestone in creating a “last-mile ecosystem” at one of the world’s most critical maritime hubs. He added that Singapore’s leadership in decarbonisation makes it the ideal starting point for scaling ammonia bunkering globally.
