Toyota Tsusho launches Tunisia’s latest solar plants in African expansion

Toyota Tsusho Corporation has officially entered the Tunisian renewable energy market, announcing the completion and commercial launch of two solar power plants with a combined capacity of 100MW. The projects were delivered through AEOLUS SAS, a Toyota Tsusho Group subsidiary dedicated to African renewables, in partnership with Norwegian solar specialist Scatec ASA.

The two facilities, located in the governorates of Sidi Bouzid and Tozeur, represent the first investment project for AEOLUS. The Sidi Bouzid Mezzouna plant (50MW) commenced operations on 1 January 2026, followed by the Tozeur plant (50MW) on 4 March 2026.

Combined, the plants are expected to supply clean electricity to approximately 120,000 Tunisian households annually under a 30-year agreement with the Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas. The initiative is projected to reduce carbon emissions by roughly 108,000 tons per year.

The project was supported by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment under the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) Model Projects for FY2023. This programme provides financial backing for decarbonising technologies in developing nations in exchange for carbon credits that contribute to the emission reduction targets of both Japan and the partner country.

Toyota Tsusho Group stated that the move aligns with its broader carbon neutrality goals and its specific commitment to the continent under the banner “for the future children of Africa.” The company intends to continue promoting green businesses that foster economic growth while addressing social and environmental issues across Africa.
