Spanish banking group BBVA channeled €82 billion into sustainable business during the first half of 2026, advancing towards its long-term strategy to fund energy transition projects, efficient resource deployment, and social initiatives.
The performance brings the financial institution’s cumulative total to €216 billion under its current 2025–2029 target of channeling €700 billion into sustainable business. The current five-year goal more than doubles its previous €300 billion benchmark, which was met in December 2024, a year ahead of schedule.
Environmental activities, covering climate change mitigation and natural capital, accounted for 76 per cent (€63 billion) of the total volume between January and June, whilst social initiatives made up the remaining 24 per cent (€19 billion).
Spain represented the largest geographic contribution at 34 per cent (€26 billion) of the total volume, followed by Mexico at 16 per cent, Türkiye at 12 per cent, and South America at 9 per cent. Other international operations accounted for 29 per cent.
By product type, financing and transactional banking dominated activity, generating 86 per cent of the total. Capital markets contributed 10 per cent, whilst project finance made up 4 per cent.
Expansion was registered across all key business units:
- Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB): Channeled €42 billion — comprising €38 billion for environmental projects and €4 billion for social causes — representing a 29 per cent rise compared to the first half of 2025. Renewable energy project financing reached €4.3 billion during the second quarter alone, led by demand across Europe and the United States.
- Commercial Banking: Mobilised €30 billion, up 48 per cent year-on-year, supported by advisory services across agriculture, infrastructure, and circular economy sectors, with notable growth in Mexico and Türkiye.
- Retail Banking: Recorded the highest year-on-year expansion, jumping 54 per cent to €10 billion (€3 billion environmental, €7 billion social), driven by consumer financing for energy-efficient housing renovations and low-emission vehicles.
The update follows BBVA’s recent announcement on 27 July confirming its role as Global Banking Partner for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP31), scheduled to take place in Antalya, Türkiye, from 9 to 20 November.
