BeZero Carbon expands to Japan

Global carbon ratings agency BeZero Carbon has officially launched operations in Japan after being selected for a Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) initiative designed to attract top-tier green finance firms. BeZero was one of only seven international sustainability companies chosen from a pool of 68 applicants worldwide, highlighting the rising demand for independent ratings in Japan’s evolving compliance market.

The company will establish BeZero Carbon K.K. in Minato-ku, Tokyo, supported by TMG’s Green Finance Subsidy Programme. This move scales up BeZero’s Asian presence following the 2025 relocation of APAC General Manager Finn O’Muircheartaigh to Singapore. The agency already counts major Japanese entities such as Hitachi Ventures and Japan Airlines as investors and recently collaborated with Mitsubishi and South Pole for the Tokyo Carbon Credit Conference.

“We are proud to be establishing a presence in Tokyo to deepen our work in the region’s carbon markets,” said Tommy Ricketts, Co-founder and CEO of BeZero Carbon. “I first had the idea to start BeZero whilst on a trip to Japan, so this is an exciting next step in our growth. With carbon credits a strategic priority for Japan, we are looking forward to playing our part in this critical region by providing independent ratings and risk tools.”

The agency’s ratings are already utilised by TMG’s carbon credit marketplace to help small and medium-sized enterprises decarbonise. Finn O’Muircheartaigh noted that since his relocation to the region, he has seen a “growing appetite for mechanisms to help scale credible climate action,” adding that the new office will allow the team to work more closely with policymakers and corporates to embed market integrity.
