Fervo Energy signs 396 MW geothermal power agreement with Google

Next-generation geothermal company Fervo Energy has announced a 396-megawatt (MW) power purchase agreement (PPA) with Google to supply carbon-free electricity from its Cape Station enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) development in Utah.

Under the terms of the agreement, electricity generated from the Cape Station GeoCluster will support power requirements for a potential Google data centre facility in the state, with operations targeted to begin in 2028. The deal includes an option for Google to expand its off-take commitment by an additional 600 MW by June 2030, potentially bringing the total portfolio capacity to nearly 1 GW. Final development plans for the computing infrastructure remain subject to engineering feasibility, local regulatory approvals, and commercial conditions.

The agreement allows Fervo to add around-the-clock power capacity to the regional energy mix without imposing infrastructure costs on existing utility ratepayers. Under Utah’s SB132 framework, subject to final regulatory clearance, the commercial structure provides options for direct-to-load contracting between the developer and end-user.

Lucia Tian, Director of Advanced Energy Technologies at Google, stated: “The next chapter of advanced power generation technology is being written in Utah. This project will drive meaningful economic benefit to the local community and help catalyze long-term energy cost reductions by making enhanced geothermal more affordable and accessible.”

The transaction expands upon previous collaborations between the two companies, which began with Fervo’s Project Red commercial pilot in Nevada in 2023, followed by a 115 MW PPA signed alongside NV Energy in June 2024. The latest deal marks a further phase in the expansion of the Cape Station project beyond its initial 100 MW site development.
