Frontier and Carbonfuture sign ethanol BECCS agreement

Infrastructure developer Frontier Infrastructure Holdings and carbon removal platform Carbonfuture have signed a multi-year commercial agreement to deliver ethanol bioenergy carbon capture and sequestration (BECCS) carbon removal credits to international corporate buyers.

The agreement stands as the largest ethanol BECCS carbon removal deal announced to date, addressing persistent market demand for durable, high-integrity carbon offsets that currently exceed near-term global supply.

Under the terms of the deal, 750,000 durable carbon removal credits generated by Project Sprint—Frontier’s flagship ethanol BECCS initiative—will be distributed to corporate and institutional purchasers through Carbonfuture’s global network and digital platform. The commercial framework establishes a direct route to market prior to the commencement of physical operations, linking Frontier’s capture, rail transit, and storage assets with Carbonfuture’s sales infrastructure.

Steven Lowenthal, Co-Chief Executive Officer of Frontier, stated that the partnership represents a key milestone for the firm’s transport initiative and client ethanol producers, noting that Carbonfuture offers a reliable framework for buyers aiming to meet corporate net-zero targets.

Project Sprint will capture biogenic carbon dioxide emitted during ethanol production and permanently sequester the gas within dedicated geological storage facilities, with active sequestration scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2027. Captured emissions will be transported using Frontier’s specialised carbon-by-rail transport network, connecting Midwestern ethanol facilities to permitted storage sites in Wyoming without relying on pipeline construction.

The resulting carbon removals will be certified under the Puro.earth Geologically Stored Carbon Methodology, with digital monitoring, reporting, and verification handled by Mangrove Systems.

Julie Mansfield, Head of Global Buyer Growth at Carbonfuture, noted that corporate buyers are actively seeking high-volume, verifiable carbon removals, adding that the collaboration expands market availability while upholding rigorous verification standards needed to scale the broader carbon management sector.
