Google has announced a new environmental project aimed at restoring a degraded salt pond and advancing carbon removal science adjacent to its Mountain View campus. The initiative focuses on Pond A1, an area impacted by over a century of industrial salt production which displaced vital Bay Area tidal marshes.
In collaboration with the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project and Ducks Unlimited, Google intends to revive the site into a thriving ecosystem to improve water quality and local biodiversity. Beyond physical restoration, the tech giant is partnering with California-based academic researchers to utilise the site as a “living laboratory.” This partnership aims to develop and refine methods for quantifying the specific carbon sequestration benefits provided by restored wetlands.
The project is part of a broader effort to reverse decades of industrial impact while contributing to the global understanding of nature-based climate solutions.
“This investment reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship — restoring our local ecosystem while sequestering carbon and contributing to the global body of climate research,” the company stated regarding the announcement.
